Safety

Peninsula Little League (PLL) is committed to providing a safe, positive, and supportive environment for every player, coach, volunteer, and family member. Safety is a shared responsibility, and we work proactively to minimize risks while promoting fun and competitive baseball and softball experiences.

Peninsula Little League participates in Little League’s ASAP (A Safety Awareness Program) and publishes an annual PLL Safety Plan. The ASAP program has led to a significant reduction in reported injuries and accidents nationwide.

Player Preparation

  • Proper stretching and warm-ups before any practice or game.
  • Appropriate nutrition and hydration prior to and during activities.
  • Adequate rest, regular breaks, and fatigue management for all players.
  • Well-maintained equipment that is used properly at all times.
  • Base runners must wear helmets at all times while on the field of play.
  • Bat “donuts” are not permitted in Little League play.
  • No player may swing a bat without wearing a helmet.
  • No player may enter a batting cage without a helmet.
  • Players should make eye contact with teammates before tossing the ball.
  • Players or coaches wearing a hard cast may not participate on the field.

Coach Preparation

  • Each coach is provided with a First Aid Kit every season.
  • Coaches are responsible for enforcing helmet and equipment rules.
  • Special awareness and precautions are taken whenever a player has a bat in hand.

Concussion certification is mandatory for all coaches, assistant coaches, and managers. Certification must be completed during registration—even if previously taken. Once completed, it remains valid in the PLL system for two years. Similar to completing the annual background check, concussion certification is required before placement on a team. No exceptions.

Environment Management

Field Inspection (Prior to Each Practice and Game)

  • Spectator Areas: Check for unsafe areas where overthrows might reach spectators.
  • Player Benches and Dugouts: Inspect for holes or fence gaps where balls could pass through.
  • Pitching Mound: Ensure the mound and landing area are firm and level.
  • Infield: Look for potholes, uneven surfaces, rocks, or debris near the bases.
  • Outfield: Check for potholes, sprinkler heads, rocks, or other obstacles.

Weather Considerations

Rain

  • Light rain that does not create unsafe conditions may not require stoppage.
  • Heavy rain causing puddles or soaked fields may require suspension.
  • Slippery bases or muddy areas are signs of dangerous conditions.
  • If play is stopped, remain with players until they are picked up.
  • Inspect fields carefully if rain occurred prior to activity.

Lightning

  • Stop play immediately if thunder or lightning occurs.
  • Wait at least 20 minutes after the most recent lightning strike before resuming.
  • Keep everyone away from metal objects.
  • Avoid open fields and trees.
  • Move participants to the safest available location.

High Winds

  • Winds approximately 25 mph or greater may create unsafe playing conditions.
  • Resume play once wind conditions improve.

Very Hot Days

  • Provide shade in dugouts and bench areas whenever possible.
  • Ensure sufficient water or electrolyte drinks are available.
  • Encourage sunscreen use to prevent sunburn.

Emergency Procedures

In the event of an injury, the coach should remain calm and attend to the injured player. Direct other players to return to their positions or bench area to allow proper care.

Minor Injuries

  • Use the First Aid Kit as needed.
  • Apply ice packs or support bandages.
  • Wear protective gloves if blood is present.
  • Clean wounds and apply sterile bandages.

Serious Injuries

  • Call 911 if necessary.
  • Stay with the injured player until help arrives.
  • Keep the player calm and comfortable.
  • Do not move the player unless remaining in place presents greater danger.

When calling 911, be prepared to provide your name, location, and a description of the emergency. Assign someone to meet and direct emergency personnel to the injured player.

Notify parents as soon as possible following an injury. Coaches must keep emergency contact information available at all practices and games.

The League Safety Officer and PLL President must be informed within 24 hours of any serious injury after medical treatment has been obtained.

It is the coach’s responsibility to determine whether a player may safely continue participation.

Safe Child Hand-Off

PLL activities begin and end with safe arrival and departure from the field. Coaches must use sound judgment to ensure players are safely picked up after practices and games. Players should never be left unattended.

Little League Child Protection Program

Peninsula Little League supports the Little League Child Protection Program, which educates children and volunteers on preventing child abuse and identifying warning signs.
